Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. Scientist is not able to understand the content and purpose of dreams yet
1. The scientific study of dreams is known as Oneirology.
2. Dreams mainly occur in the R.E.M. stage (rapid-eye movement) of sleep, that is when brain activity is high and signalled by continuous movements of the eyes.
3. Dreams can last for a few seconds, or as long as twenty minutes. You forgot 50% of your dream with 5 minutes after you wakeup and within 10 min you forget around 90% dream.
4. In some of the earliest societies, people were unable to tell the difference between the dream world and the waking world. They just simply chose not to make the distinction because they believed that the dream world was an extension of reality, though a more powerful world.
5. The Chinese people believed that the soul leaves the body to go into the dream world. If dreamers are suddenly awakened, their soul may not to return to the body, thus for this reason, some Chinese today, are suspicious of alarm clocks.
6. People who became blind after birth can see images in their dreams.
7. People who are born blind do not see any images, but have dreams equally vivid involving their other senses of sound, smell, touch and emotion.
8. Our dreams are frequently full of strangers who play out certain parts, our mind is not inventing those faces – they are real faces of real people that you have seen during your life but may not know or remember? The evil killer in your latest dream may be your class teacher. We have all seen hundreds of thousands of faces through our lives, so we have an endless supply of characters for our brain to utilize during our dreams.
9. The most common emotion experienced in dreams is anxiety, others are fear, joy and happiness. Negative emotions are more common than positive ones.
10. According to studies done on many different animals its been proved that they all show the same brain waves during dreaming sleep as humans. Watch a dog sleeping sometime. The paws move like they are running and they make yipping sounds as if they are chasing something in a dream.
11. It’s found in study that men tend to dream more about other men. Around 70% of the characters in a man’s dream are other men. On the other side, a woman’s dream contains almost an equal number of men and women.
12. Our body is virtually paralyzed during sleep, most likely to prevent our body from acting out aspects of our dreams. According to the Wikipedia, “Glands begin to secrete a hormone that helps induce sleep and neurons send signals to the spinal cord which cause the body to relax and later become essentially paralyzed.”
13. Both men and women experience sexually related physical reactions to their dreams regardless of whether the dream is sexual in nature; males experience erections and females experience increased vaginal blood flow.
14. Dream incorporation is a phenomenon whereby an actual sensation, such as environmental sounds, are incorporated into dreams, such as hearing a phone ringing in a dream while it is ringing in reality or dreaming of urination while wetting the bed.
15. You cannot snore and dream at the same time, although I didn’t find any scientific evidence of this statement.
